Valdar Liive is a mentor and freelancer advisor, former board member of the Finnish-Estonian Trade Association SEKY and the Finnish-Estonian Chamber of Commerce FECC. For 12 years, he served as Enterprise Estonia's representative in Finland, promoting cooperation between Finnish and Estonian companies. For this he was recognized not only by Estonians but also by Finns, especially for advancing the Helsinki and Tallinn "Talsinki" twin city idea. The Finnish business daily Kauppalehti, for instance, named him player of the week, calling him a networking wizard. In 2010, the Finnish president presented Valdar Liive with the insignia of Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland.
